Center Grove is an unincorporated part of western Johnson County in White River Township. Center Grove is most known for its award-winning school district, Center Grove Schools. It is located about 15 miles south of downtown Indianapolis. Its borders are primarily County Line Road to the north, Greenwood to the east (approximately State Road 135 +/- some neighborhoods), State Road 144 and incorporated Bargersville to the South, and White River to the West of Hwy. 37. Center Grove residents will either have a Greenwood or Bargersville address.
The Google Map here outlines all of White River Township. Google doesn’t give a “school district” outline. White River Township is a close representation of the Center Grove area, although there are a few areas here that have been annexed officially into Greenwood and Bargersville.
Even though Center Grove has no actual “town”, the school district and local activities keep Center Grove feeling like a tight-knit community. It enjoys the city features and amenities of Greenwood and even Indianapolis, but retains its own distinction through the school system.
What are the homes for sale in Center Grove like?
Homes for sale in Center Grove are mostly in subdivisions, but many main thoroughfares are lined with mid-century homes that were built before Greenwood ran out of land and development moved into Center Grove. Most of Center Grove was developed in the last 40 years. There are so many great properties and custom homes, as well as nice subdivisions developed with larger homes for families. Property is Center Grove is desirable, and therefore a good investment.
How far is the commute from Center Grove to Indianapolis?
Center Grove is a commuting community. Commuting into downtown Indianapolis can take anywhere from 25-40 minutes with traffic, depending on how far south in Center Grove that you live. Also, it is a fairly easy commute to Columbus, Indiana. That drive will get you to downtown in 30-45 minutes.
What is great about living in Center Grove?
Being so close to Greenwood makes every city convenience close. The Greenwood area has all the major box stores, grocery stores, franchise restaurants, chain retail and the Greenwood Park Mall. Center Grove is 95% residential, so you will only find a few notable local businesses that you should be sure to love and frequent. Coffee is locally roasted at Strange Brew Coffee, and you will find the owners and the atmosphere a pleasant way to get your caffeine fix! If you have kids who are attending Center Grove Schools, you will want to go and browse for spiritwear at Coffey Connection. Chose a garment and your choice of all the different school logos they have. They will screenprint your shirt while you wait! The kiddos will have enjoy “fun time” open gym at FUNdamentals by Wrights. Wrights has a gymnastics facililty and also operates 3 other “tumbling and climbing” gyms throughout the metro area. And right on State Road 135 is Orchard Golf Center, a driving range, Miniature Golf and 18-hole 3 par course that is great for all ages!
Center Grove is very residential with little retail or restaurants. But the 135 corridor is considered the go-to area for Center Grove. Although that sliver of commercial property along 135 is annexed officially into Greenwood, we all consider it Center Grove. Along the 135 corridor we have great options to eat out including some franchises like Bonefish, Bob Evans, Texas Roadhouse, Applebees, TGI Fridays, and some locally-owned favorites: Stone Creek Dining Company, Stacked Pickle, House of Tokyo, YiaYia’s Pancake House, Tried & True Alehouse, South of Chicago Pizza, Campbell’s Highland Sports Grille. Since the south part of Center Grove is incorporated into Bargersville, be sure to check out the page on Bargersville for a few more great local spots to eat!
Besides the award-winning Center Grove schools, living here provides so many opportunities for kids enrichment. The Center Grove Fine Arts Academy is a youth theater group doing full Broadway productions with kids 8-18. Youth sports leagues abound in Basketball and Soccer, and summer camps are offered at the YMCA, churches, schools and community centers in the arts, sports, STEM and everything in between.
Beginning in 2020, the state will begin construction of the final leg of the expansion of I-69, converting Hwy. 37 into interstate. It is expected to bring economic growth to the Center Grove area, and more commercial development potential, including hotels, more restaurants and retail. It is projected to effect the economy of the southside by $4.1 billion over 20 years.
