This is my BEST OF THE SOUTHSIDE series! I am here to help you “Love Where You Live” and every year I come across things I need to share about what makes the Southside great! These are all the small businesses, services, food, shops and activities that made a big impression on me and I want to honor them by sharing with you!
Around our house, we have two theater buffs…my husband and my daughter! And she is only 10! She has always loved imaginary play, dress up and stories. Around age 7, I started to feel like we should find some way she could participate in theater. A few years ago, we enrolled her in a summer camp with her dance studio and she loved it. They spent a week practicing and performing a short show of 101 Dalmations. After that I went searching for more options.
Finally, at the end of 2017, I happened upon a youth theater program that was actually here on the southside! And in January, she began rehearsals and we have loved that she has this opportunity! Here is the great program that we found:
Greenwood & The Southside’s Best Youth Theater:
Center Grove Fine Arts Academy
Finding a great youth theater program for your kid is no easy task. And that is why I need to share why we love Center Grove Fine Arts Academy so much! First of all, CGFAA is a very uplifting, inclusive atmosphere. While they are employing a number of “real life theater” experiences, one thing that doesn’t happen is cuts. If a child auditions, they get a part in the production, even if it is in the ensemble. They always give them a “character” and costume, even if they don’t have a speaking part.
As for real theater live experience, they do hold auditions and call backs. They do rehearsals and call times. And, the full performances are done on an actual theater stage (junior shows are performed at the church).
This experience has been great for our daughter. She is seeing that hard work and practice produces something amazing! She loves to perform! And the best part is the relationships she makes…the atmosphere is like a big family…with the kids and with the adult volunteers as well. I personally volunteer for the costume committee and I love it!
Finally, I love that CGFAA is focused on the kid’s relationship with God. Each show employs a chaplin and each rehearsal includes a devotion time. Children of every faith are welcomed.
Auditions are usually Dec-Jan and Aug-Sept. Check out their website to sign up!
